Back in 1975 brothers Larry and Lou Carvelli put together their ideas and hungry hearts when they decided to bring the Chicago style Hot Dog and Chicago style sandwiches to the Chain of Lakes and Lake County, Illinois area known as Volo. The original double-wide trailer was located on US Hwy 12 around the corner from the areas famous Volo Antique Auto Museum. Two brothers with Italian heritage running a hotdog stand: it was only logical to call their first place Fratellos, which means “brothers” in Italian. Great food, quality, and service are what have made Fratellos one of the most successful hotdog and Italian beef emporiums in the area. With more and more people craving their food, the only alternative was to open more restaurants. Lou and Larry ultimately opened three more Fratellos, including locations in Rolling Meadows, Lake Zurich, and Palatine. As the locations grew, business grew, but after twenty years of running a successful enterprise together, Larry decided to hang up his apron and move to Florida. When Larry left for Florida, Lou sold three locations, which allowed him to concentrate all of his attention at his original restaurant in the Volo area, which has since been annexed into the village of Lakemoor, Illinois. Fratellos has remained under the ownership of one brother, but the iconic name had to stay.
Since those days Fratellos in Lakemoor has grown both in size and business. Lou and the entire staff have perpetuated one of the best and busiest hot dog stands in the Chicago land area. Fratellos has been inducted in the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame and is included in the book “Never Put Ketchup on a Hot Dog” written by Bob Schwartz senior vice president of Vienna Beef Company. With great menu items like Chicago style hot dogs, their own recipe Italian beef, juicy char burgers, and trendy paninis, wraps, salads and subs, Fratellos has fed and pleased many customers from both sides of the state line. Fratellos has recently been renovated to meet the needs of customers. With updated décor, expanded inside and el fresco seating and a convenient Drive-Thru. Fratellos is working hard every day to make their customers comfortable, pleased, and their stomachs’ full.
Great food with a nostalgic but modern look, Lou has built Fratellos into a testament to the food service needs of today and the taste of the neighborhoods from an earlier time. A measure of his success is that the people just keep coming back for more.
